Director

Una obsesión infantil con los dinosaurios, la arcilla y King Kong es lo que llevó a Mike a una vida de animación stop motion. Como director y animador, ha contribuido a la creación de numerosos proyectos, cortometrajes y largometrajes premiados.

Mike se inició en el cine trabajando como asistente de animación en Nightmare before Christmas. de Tim Burton. Y más tarde, Mike dirigió Corpse Bride con Burton, por la que fueron nominados al Oscar a la Mejor Película de Animación en 2005. También fue el director de Ping Pong Rabbit (En 2017). Entre las múltiples colaboraciones con otros proyectos, destaca su participación como animador invitado Anomalisa de Duke Johnson y Charlie Kaufman

Además del stop-motion, a Mike le apasiona la enseñanza: Impartió clases de stop-motion para el Programa de animación experimental de CalArts y fue mentor de estudiantes para el Departamento de animación de personajes de CalArts.

Además, Mike diseñó y dirigió el programa stop-motion para la Escuela de Teatro, Cine y Televisión de UCLA, así como talleres para el Instituto de Verano de Animación Stop-Motion de UCLA. Ha sido anfitrión de presentaciones sobre el arte y la historia del stop-motion para la serie de conferencias Masterclass de UCLA, y ha realizado talleres de construcción de títeres y proyecciones históricas en las principales escuelas de arte y festivales de cine en los Estados Unidos, Polonia y China.

Mike vive en Texas con su esposa y su tortuga mascota.

A childhood obsession with dinosaurs, clay and King Kong is what led Mike to a life of stop-motion animation. As a director and animator he’s contributed to the creation of many award-winning projects, shorts and feature films.

Mike got his start in features working as an animation assistant on Tim Burton’s “Nightmare before Christmas.” Mike later went on to direct “Corpse Bride” with Burton, for which they were nominated for Academy Award Best Animated Feature in 2005.

In addition to stop-motion, Mike is passionate about teaching. He taught stop-motion classes for CalArts Experimental Animation Program and mentored students for CalArts Character Animation Department.

Mike designed and spear-headed the stop-motion program for UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, as well as workshops for the UCLA Stop-Motion Animation Summer Institute. He has hosted presentations on the art and history of stop-motion for UCLA’s Masterclass lecture series.

He has conducted puppet-building workshops and historical screenings at major art-schools and film-festivals throughout the United States, Poland and China.

Mike lives in Texas with his wife and their pet tortoise.
